OPHARDT Hygiene recieves German Innovation Award 2025

The fuel cell-powered hand sanitizer dispenser was honored with the prestigious German Innovation Award at the German Museum of Technology in Berlin.

As the world’s first hand sanitizer dispenser powered by a fuel cell, the PRAESIDIO® Fuel Cell is a true problem-solver. This “Made in Switzerland” product eliminates the need for environmentally harmful battery replacements and combines infection protection with a sustainable approach.

The product idea is ingenious: OPHARDT’s touchless hygiene dispenser generates its own energy using the alcohol-based hand sanitizer and the integrated fuel cell, making it completely independent of external power sources.

PRAESIDIO Fuel Cell Impresses Right from the Start

The product made a splash at its market launch in late 2024: it was presented at the largest trade fair for hygiene and cleaning—ISSA North America—and received an award there.

Now, the PRAESIDIO® Fuel Cell has also received special recognition on the European continent: the German Innovation Award. In the “Medical & Health” category, the fuel cell-powered hand sanitizer dispenser stood out among numerous notable product submissions and impressed the nine-member jury of the German Innovation Award, who praised the unique concept with the following words: „Many touchless hygiene products face the challenge of having to regularly replace batteries, which not only strains resources but also causes additional costs and effort. The ‘PRAESIDIO Fuel Cell’ addresses this issue by cleverly utilizing a small portion of the sanitizer, converting it into electrical energy to power the dispenser—environmentally friendly, low-maintenance, and efficient.

The jury continued: „This solution impresses with its sustainable approach, which simultaneously meets practical requirements in medical and hygienic environments, and demonstrates how technological innovations can specifically contribute to simplifying everyday processes.”

The official ceremony and award presentation took place on May 13, 2025, at the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. Albrecht Lang and Winfried Giesberts accepted the award on behalf of OPHARDT Hygiene in a festive setting.
