As a digital software solution, the Kanary® brand supports the effective optimisation of hygiene standards in healthcare, facility management and industry. The hygiene software has now been given a comprehensive redesign with an even more intuitive user interface. There are also numerous new functions.

For more than ten years, hygiene managers in hospitals, clinics and facility management have been relying on Kanary®. In combination with the intelligent hygiene dispensers, the hygiene software provides fully automatic 24/7 support for the digital recording of fill levels, battery levels and function tests as well as for analysing hand hygiene behaviour.
A redesign that paves the way for the future
With the redesign and functional enhancements that have now been completed, Kanary® offers users even more hygiene benefits. There are five relevant basic ideas behind the extensive further development.
- Web application, not web pages
The new page was designed to be a single application, that changes the data you see depending on the context. - Consistency in layout, states, and navigation
Users should be able to expect certain actions and reaction when using software based on their experience. This concept was built into this design from the ground up, making it easier for users to explore and use the application as it currently is, and adopt new functionality as it changes. - Designed for meaning; colors have a purpose
- Maximized use of screen real estate
The old app had a flaw due to catering to older technology – centered, narrowed content is a thing of the past in the new UI. We take advantage of the space afforded to us on all screen sizes, big or small. - Designed for IoT
We created a design for a software that captures and displays IOT data grouped into a tree structure. This simple view point allowed us to create a UX that can grow and change over time without having to re-imagine the design time and time again. We are future proofed in the IOT space.
Since the introduction of OPHARDT’s digital solutions in 2011, the hygiene software has recorded almost 150,000,000 hand hygiene events. The update sets the course for many more millions of hand hygiene events.The entire Kanary® cosmos is also equipped for the integration of more and more intelligent hygiene dispensers. Fortunately, there are more and more devices with OPHARDT’s innovative Smart From The Start technology on the market. These devices are equipped with intelligence from the outset and can therefore be connected to Kanary® at any time within a few seconds.
New hygiene dashboards and smart updates
In addition to the fresh design of the software, newly introduced hygiene dashboards and functions optimise the user experience in the long term.
The new dashboards include a so-called ‘labour dashboard’, which clearly shows users how effectively dispenser maintenance tasks such as refilling soap or hand disinfectant are being carried out. The dashboard for task management is also new. The overview allows conclusions to be drawn about the different task statuses. Hygiene managers can use this data to recognise how many dispensers still need to be refilled, for example.
In addition, a newly designed compliance dashboard now offers hygiene specialists and others an even clearer view of current hand hygiene behaviour at the individual levels – i.e. at hospital, ward or room level. Other important updates include a revised page in the reporting system, the creation of room plans and updated notification fields. These three adjustments make it easier for Kanary® software users to analyse hygiene standards.
Analysing hygiene on the mobile device
As part of the further development of Kanary®, we also focussed on the mobile UI. In view of the increasing number of users with mobile devices, the layout was redesigned for use with mobile phones and tablets to make it even more intuitive and convenient. Areas that mobile users use most frequently are now displayed at the front and are easily accessible.
The new design, including the features presented, is currently being introduced step by step and can be used by Kanary® software customers.
