OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System® supports the improvement of hand hygiene on the intensive care unit
Careful hand hygiene offers the most effective protection against nosocomial infections and their associated consequences. To improve patient safety in this area the hospital “Städtisches Klinikum Braunschweig” has recently installed the OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System® on its intensive care unit. The monitoring system continually registers hand hygiene activities making improvement potential visible.
Positive effects on hand disinfection
Since September 2016 a total of 34 intelligent ingo-man® plus WECO hand disinfectant dispensers register every hand hygiene activity on the hygiene sensitive unit. Using a web-based software those responsible for hygiene can configure their own evaluation parameters. In combination with regular, targeted hand hygiene seminars the number of hand disinfections per patient day increased in 2017, in comparison to 2016, by 16 percent.
Ute Köhler, hygiene specialist at the hospital in Brunswick says „Thanks to the transparency of information concerning the precise amount of disinfectant used together with the exact time and location, we are able to plan seminars on hand hygiene based on real needs. We use the OPHARDT Hygiene Monitoring System® during trainings and we clearly see an improvement in hand hygiene activities and also a reduction in the number of nosocomial infections on the unit.“
